Mentality: Family, tradition and modesty

Family above all

Family is the foundation of society. Multi-generational coexistence is not an exception, especially in rural areas, and relatives often help each other with everyday matters. Celebrations such as Christmas or birthdays are usually celebrated in a wider family circle.

Deep respect for traditions

Folklore, folk songs and crafts are still alive, especially in regions such as Orava, Liptov or Šariš. Traditional festivals (e.g. Východná or Detva) celebrate heritage and bring generations together.

Reservedness and direct communication

Slovaks can be reserved at first, but over time they become warm and honest. They value directness – “talking straight” is a sign of respect. At the same time, they tend to criticize “their own” (so-called collective pessimism), which is often a manifestation of love for their homeland.

Food as a social event

Slovak cuisine is simple but hearty – bryndza dumplings, cabbage soup or fried cheese are national treasures. Gatherings over a meal are an opportunity for long conversations, often with homemade wine or slivovitz.
